CystoProtek® Glossary
Anti-inflammatory – An agent that reduces or prevents inflammation.
Chondroitin Sulfate - One of the main components of cartilage and mucosa layers, forming the connective tissue that holds muscles, nerves and blood vessels together. It is a major component of the protective glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layers of the bladder. It also inhibits the release of proteolytic enzymes that cause tissue damage.
Chronic Pelvic Pain - Chronic pelvic pain is pain in the pelvic region (the area below your bellybutton and above the hips) that lasts for at least 6 months. The pain may be a steady or it may come and go. It can feel like a dull ache, or it can be sharp. The pain may be mild, or it may be bad enough to interfere with normal daily activities. Chronic pelvic pain can be a symptom of another disease, or it can be designated as a condition in its own right.
Chronic Prostatitis - Pain in a man's pelvic region that persists for at least 3 months. This primary symptom is often accompanied by voiding difficulties and effects on sexual function, usually pain related to ejaculation
Cystitis – A bacterial inflammation or infection of the urinary bladder. It is also called Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).
Frequent Urination / Urinary Frequency –
To urinate significantly more than usual. Frequent urination at night time is called nocturia
Glomerulations - pinpoint bleeding caused by recurrent irritation
Glucosamine Sulfate – A building block of joint cartilage as well as bladder, prostate and GI protective glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layers. It also has some mild anti-inflammatory properties
Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer of bladder –The inner most layer of the urinary bladder consists primarily of substances known as glycosaminoglycan (GAG). These substances are long polymeric molecules held closely to together by interactions between their atoms. This interaction binds GAGs into a protective mucin film, protecting the bladder against penetration of bacteria and potentially harmful chemical substances in adjacent urine.
Inflammation - A protective tissue response to injury or destruction of tissues, which serves to destroy, weaken or isolate both the injurious agent and the injured tissues.
Interstitial Cystitis - Also called Painful Bladder Syndrome, is a disorder of the urinary bladder characterized by suprapubic/pelvic pain along with urgency and frequency of urination. PBS/IC occurs primarily in women and symptoms are exacerbated by stress, ovulatory hormones and certain foods. PBS/IC pathogenesis is unknown, but the most consistent findings involve some dysfunction of the bladder glycosaminoglycan (GAG) protective layer and a high number of activated bladder mast cells. There is no curative therapy.
Nocturia –Frequent nighttime urination
Olive Kernel Extract - A potent anti-oxidant that helps repair damaged tissues. It is also instrumental in helping the body absorb chondroitin sulfate, quercetin and sodium hyaluronate.
Overactive Bladder - A condition that results from sudden, involuntary contraction of the muscle in the wall of the urinary bladder that causes a sudden and unstoppable need to urinate. It can cause incontinence, which is the involuntary loss of urine. (Also referred to as urge incontinence)
Painful Bladder Syndrome - Also called Interstitial Cystitis, is a disorder of the urinary bladder characterized by suprapubic/pelvic pain along with urgency and frequency of urination.
Prostatitis - An infection in the prostate gland
Quercetin - An extract of the saphora plant, quercetin is a non-acidic natural flavonoid. It inhibits the activation of mast cells and other inflammatory cells.
Rutin - An extract of the saphora plant, rutin is a non-acidic natural flavonoid that adds additional anti-inflammatory qualities and liberates quercetin in the intestine, making absorption easier.
Sodium Hyaluronate – A main component of protective connective tissues, including the protective GAG layers of the bladder. It is essential in the rebuilding process.
Urgent Urination / Urinary Urgency –
Very sudden, absolutely compelling urge to urinate. Often times, the sufferer experiences bladder discomfort or pain as well.
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) - A bacterial inflammation or infection of the urinary bladder. It is also called Cystitis.
Vulva – The female external genital organs including the labia, clitoris and entrance to the vagina.
Vulvodynia - A chronic, diffuse, unremitting sensation of burning of the vulva. The painful sensation may extend to the perineum, thigh or buttock. It is often linked to discomfort in the urethra and rectum.
